England Beat Italy by 24 Runs

England registered a hard-fought 24-run victory over Italy in the 29th Match of Group C at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The match turned into an entertaining contest as Italy mounted a strong chase, but England’s disciplined bowling in the final overs ensured they defended their total successfully.

England Innings – Will Jacks’ Explosive Finish Lifts England

Batting first, England posted an imposing 202/7 in 20 overs, thanks to a powerful late surge led by Will Jacks, who smashed an unbeaten 53 off 22 balls at a strike rate above 240. His aggressive stroke play in the death overs turned a good total into a match-winning one.

Earlier, Philip Salt gave England early momentum with a brisk 28 off 15 balls, while Tom Banton added 30 off 21 balls to maintain the scoring tempo. Contributions from Jacob Bethell (23) and Sam Curran (25) helped England build a solid platform during the middle overs. Although captain Harry Brook and Jos Buttler departed early, England’s deep batting lineup ensured continuous pressure on the Italian bowlers.

For Italy, Grant Stewart and Crishan Kalugamage picked up two wickets each, while Ben Manenti, Ali Hasan, and JJ Smuts chipped in with one wicket apiece, but they struggled to contain England’s late acceleration.

Italy Chase – Brave Fight Falls Short

Chasing 203, Italy showed impressive fighting spirit and stayed competitive for most of the innings. Ben Manenti produced a sensational knock of 60 off just 25 balls, smashing four fours and six sixes to keep Italy firmly in the chase.

He was well supported by Grant Stewart, who scored an aggressive 45 off 23 balls, while Justin Mosca contributed 43 runs at the top of the order. These performances helped Italy keep the required run rate within reach entering the final overs.

However, England’s bowlers held their nerve at crucial moments. Jamie Overton delivered a match-defining spell, taking 3 wickets for 18 runs, while Sam Curran and Jofra Archer picked up key breakthroughs that halted Italy’s momentum. Italy were eventually bowled out for 178 in 20 overs, falling 24 runs short despite their spirited effort.

Key Turning Point

The turning point came during the death overs of England’s innings when Will Jacks accelerated sharply, adding vital runs that proved decisive. Italy’s middle-order assault briefly threatened the chase, but the timely wickets taken by Overton and Curran ensured England maintained control in the closing stages.

Match Impact

The victory strengthened England’s position in Group C and showcased their batting depth and bowling balance. While Italy impressed with fearless batting, particularly through Ben Manenti and Grant Stewart, England’s experience in pressure situations ultimately made the difference.

Overall, the match delivered exciting T20 entertainment, highlighting England’s ability to recover from early setbacks and finish strongly—both with the bat and the ball—while Italy earned praise for pushing a top side deep into the contest.
